The fear of books in today's society is caused by non belt whopping's as children. Traditional books all have a straight edge going down the center where the pages join. However a large hurdle for getting young minds to actually read them is related to how they were punished as a child. Studies show that the binding of a book makes a vary similar appearance to that of someone being punished by having to stand in a corner of a room for minutes at a time, and that the amount of time you spend with your nose against those bindings in the book are very closely reassemble the punishment. This bring up the trauma of the punishment in some individuals tested.
